Lower School (Pre-kindergarten–4)

Building Strong Thinkers and Learners

In Lower School, students develop strong academic skills while learning to think critically, ask questions, and engage deeply with their learning.

A Strong Academic Foundation

At Mead, academic skill-building and thinking go hand in hand.

Students build essential skills in

  • Reading and comprehension
  • Writing across genres
  • Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving through inquiry-based learning

This approach builds both understanding and confidence. Teachers support students in developing accuracy, fluency, and the ability to think through complex ideas.

Learning in Action

  • Reading, writing, and math are taught through meaningful, connected work
  • Classroom discussions that build critical thinking and communication
  • Hands-on projects that apply academic skills
  • Opportunities to present ideas and explain thinking

 Growing Independence and Confidence

In Lower School, students begin to take more ownership of their learning.

They learn to:

  • Ask questions and seek answers
  • Work independently and collaboratively
  • Reflect on their work and improve it

Known and Supported

Teachers know each student well and provide guidance that is both academic and personal.

This strong foundation of relationships helps students take risks, build confidence, and stay engaged in their learning.

A Connected School Day

Academic learning is complemented by the following experiences, creating a balanced and engaging school experience.

Prepared for the Next Level

By the end of Lower School, students are ready for more advanced work in Middle School.

They have the skills, confidence, and independence needed to engage in deeper analysis, research, and discussion.
