The last week in May is affectionately known at Mead as "Trips Week." Students in Grades 5-8 pack their bags and embark on adventures throughout the Northeast. The 6th Grade trip to Cape Cod, in particular, has been a cherished Mead tradition for more than 30 years.

These trips serve as the culmination of classroom learning while also fostering independence, camaraderie, and lasting memories. When we ask alumni what they remember most about their time at Mead, these beloved trips are often at the top of the list. Thankfully, the sun came out, and this year's trips proved to be as spectacular as ever. Read below to learn more about the adventures our students experienced.

5th Grade Day Trip to New York City

The 5th Grade class had an exciting adventure to New York City on Tuesday!

The journey began with a train ride from Stamford to Manhattan. Once they arrived, students headed to the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath), where they participated in a lesson on graph theory and explored the museum's many interactive exhibits.

After a busy morning of learning, the class enjoyed a delicious lunch featuring favorites such as chicken wings and French fries. They then made their way to the Nintendo Store, where students enjoyed browsing the displays and experiencing all things Nintendo.

Before heading home, the class walked to Grand Central Terminal for a special treat from Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. They then boarded the train back to Stamford, ending a memorable day filled with learning, exploration, and fun.

A wonderful time was had by all, and the students represented Mead beautifully throughout the trip!

6th Grade Three-Night Trip to Cape Cod

For more than three decades, the Cape Cod trip has been a highlight of the Mead experience. During their three-night adventure, students explored the natural beauty, history, and culture of Cape Cod while strengthening friendships and building confidence away from home.

On the way to Cape Cod, students visited the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where they learned about the region's rich maritime history. Wednesday's highlight was a whale watch excursion to Stellwagen Bank, the first U.S. National Marine Sanctuary. Sailing aboard the Hyannis Whale Watcher from Barnstable Harbor, students were thrilled to observe humpback whales, minke whales, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, and gray seals in their natural habitat.

On Thursday, students participated in a guided exploration of the marsh at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, where they encountered countless fiddler crabs and learned about the unique coastal ecosystem.

Back at the Hyannis Youth Hostel, students filled their science journals, played frisbee and cornhole, practiced on the piano keyboard, and enjoyed countless moments of laughter and connection. The trip provided nonstop opportunities for learning, bonding, and fun.

On the journey home, the class stopped at Mystic Seaport to visit the Charles W. Morgan, the world's last surviving wooden whaling ship. Throughout the trip, music filled the bus rides as students sang together and celebrated their adventures. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

7th and 8th Grade Overnight Trip to New York City

The 7th and 8th Grade students traveled to New York City for an exciting overnight experience filled with educational opportunities, cultural exploration, and time together as a community.

Their adventure began on Wednesday with plenty of walking to take in the sights and sounds of the city. Students visited both the Museum of Chinese in America and the Tenement Museum, gaining valuable insights into the diverse stories that have shaped New York City. Along the way, they enjoyed a stop for gelato and a visit to the iconic Economy Candy shop.

Thursday brought another full day of exploration. After an early breakfast at the hostel, students traveled to Battery Park and boarded a ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The beautiful weather provided breathtaking views of Lower Manhattan and the perfect setting for an outdoor lunch.

Later in the day, students visited the 9/11 Memorial Pools, where they had the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the site and honor those affected by the events of September 11. The day concluded with a delicious dinner at a Japanese restaurant, made even more special by a visit from Peter.

On Friday, students packed up and made their way across Central Park to the Museum of the City of New York. One highlight was viewing the museum's remarkable 1,600-square-foot miniature model of New York City's five boroughs, where students enthusiastically pointed out many of the places they had visited throughout the trip. After a quick lunch in the park, the group headed to the 125th Street station to catch their train back to Stamford, bringing an incredible adventure to a close.

These annual trips continue to be some of the most meaningful and memorable experiences in a Mead education, combining hands-on learning, adventure, friendship, and the joy of exploring the world beyond the classroom.
