The Mead Woods: A New Chapter in Outdoor Learning
By Nikki Miller

At Mead, we have always prioritized outdoor learning as an essential part of a child’s educational experience. This fall, we took that commitment to a whole new level by transforming a section of our woods into a vibrant and imaginative outdoor learning space for students to gather, play, create, and explore.
Led by Mead School parents Nathan Martin and Jeanette Sitter, along with the support of many dedicated community members, the Mead Woods project came to life through months of thoughtful planning and tireless work. Their vision has created a beautiful natural environment that will serve our students for years to come.
Today, we officially opened the Mead Woods with a special commemorative ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring Nathan and Jeanette’s incredible contributions to our community. We began the celebration by gathering together to sing two beloved Mead songs: “The Earth Is Our Mother” and “The Earth, The Air, The Fire, The Water.” Following the ribbon cutting, students, faculty, and families gathered in our newly created outdoor amphitheater for a joyful Sharing Assembly surrounded by nature.
This new space represents so much of what makes Mead special: creativity, collaboration, stewardship, imagination, and community connection. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this vision to life.
We are excited to continue utilizing the Mead Woods through a special Outdoor Learning Day planned for June 5, 2026.
The purpose of this half-day event is to bring students and teachers outdoors to learn, collaborate, create, and build community together. Throughout the morning, students will rotate through a series of hands-on workshops focused on movement, teamwork, creative expression, and environmental exploration.
The Mead Woods already feels like a magical extension of our campus, and we cannot wait to watch our students continue to learn and grow within it.
